Her mother and she began to sing professionally together at the New Hope Baptist Church in Newark when Whitney was only 15 years old. The two sang backing vocals on Chaka Khan's track in 1978 Im Every Woman. Then, she performed backing vocals to Jermaine Jackson and Lou Rawls and her mother. Her first gig was as a lead vocalist for the New York-based New York Funk band Material. Her quality of vocal work earned her the attention of big record labels like Arista who signed her in 1983. The Whitney album released in 1987 which featured the songs that I Wanna Dance With Somebody and Where Do Broken Hearts Get to, continued her success. However, it is The Bodyguard of 1992 that was her breakthrough album and made her one of the biggest-selling performers in the history of music. Although the film and the performance of her in it were not highly appreciated, the album's soundtrack and her version of the Dolly Parton song I Will Always Love You topped the charts of albums and singles for a period of time and sold over 44 million copies all over the world.
